The Berlin Flamingos Schüler Team Fall To The Sluggers On The Road

The unbeaten Sluggers hosted the Flamingos on Saturday the 28th of May. The Flamingos, making their first road trip of the season, were only able to travel with nine players. Cedric Clicqué lead off for the Flamingos with a walk and later scored on a wild pitch. Jason Hosnedl got on base with a single and scored when Erik Ortiz grounded out to the shortstop.

Erik Ortiz was the starting pitcher for the Flamingos and the Sluggers worked out three full count walks amongst the first four batters. The third batter in the lineup grounded out to Erik who was able to get the easy out with Noah Skibo playing first base. Cedric made his first start as catcher and a wild pitch by Erik that Cedric couldn’t corral allowed the third run to score in the inning. But Erik regained his composure and struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

Joel Bloch was up first in the top of the second and was hit by a pitch. The Sluggers then turned to a more experienced pitcher to face Noah Skibo. But the new pitcher couldn’t get control and Joel made his way around the bases on wild pitches as Noah drew the walk. Noah also made his way around on wild pitches. And after a strike out and two more walks by Celina Hajduk and Cedric, the Sluggers were at the top of the Flamingos lineup with only one out and down 4 to 3. So the Sluggers went with yet another even more experienced pitcher. Jason hit Cedric into a force out at second base and a strike out closed the inning with two left on base.

Erik was settled in the second inning and struck out the first batter. The second batter hit to right field and was held to single by Celina which set up the force out at second when the following batter grounded back to the pitcher. Back at the top of the lineup, the Sluggers benefitted from an infield error by the Flamingos which scored the tying run. The inning was then closed out with a strikeout.

Erik opened the third inning with a single and advanced to second on an error in the outfield. But he was stranded at second as the Slugger’s pitcher was dominating. In his final season of the Schülerliga, he was pitching with speed and control. The next three Flamingos were all on their heels and were struck out.

Felix Otten took the mound for the Flamingos in the third and gave up a single to the first batter and the second batter reached base on an error. The next batter reached base on a walk and two runs scored on wild pitches. Felix was having trouble finding the strike zone but was aided by some strong infield defense as Jason, now catching, threw out a runner stealing second. Cedric, back at third base, threw a runner out at home who was trying to advance on a ground ball. One more run scored as Felix finished the inning off with a strikeout.

The Sluggers were required to change pitchers yet again as the previous pitcher had pitched in both the second and third inning. But the next pitcher, also in his last year, picked up where his teammate left off. Two Flamingos were struck out before Cedric was able to work out another walk. Jason was then out-by-rule as his bunt attempt with two strikes went foul. After one and a half hours and three and a half innings the score was 7 to 4 for the home team.

Liam Horn played second base and John Herbst played left field.
